Gouache Painting Fundamentals: Value

Values are the most fundamental aspect of any kind of image-making. In this course, we'll break down the basics of value in clear, applicable ways. We'll look at examples in painting, photography, and film to get a sense of why value is important and how we can use it to our advantage in our painting.

Using gouache, an opaque water medium, we'll discover through a few exercises and demos just how to manipulate values using paint consistency and application. By painting along using only black and white, you'll start to get a handle on how the gouache works (along with all its quirks). At the completion of this course, you'll be able to complete quick value studies to improve your studio work or to venture outdoors and start your plein air journey off on the right foot.
